Product Carbon Footprint

Connection to Legislation

Systembolaget’s Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is more than a calculation. It is a practical tool that connects global climate goals, EU legislation, and the growing demand for transparent and credible climate data. By working with PCF, producers, growers, distributors, and importers gain clearer insight into their climate impact — and are better prepared for a regulatory landscape that is evolving quickly. Whether you are new to climate reporting or already working strategically with emissions reductions, PCF helps create a shared and consistent foundation.

Global Climate Goals – Why Climate Data Matters
Climate accountability is increasing worldwide, with the European Union playing a leading role. Understanding this broader context helps explain why product-level climate data is becoming increasingly important across the alcoholic beverage value chain.

The Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement is a global commitment to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Reaching this goal requires significant greenhouse gas reductions across all sectors.

To contribute meaningfully, companies are expected to measure, report, and reduce their emissions. Reliable product-level data — such as PCF — makes this possible in practice.

The EU Climate Law
The European Climate Lawturns climate ambitions into legally binding targets within the EU. It sets a binding target of climate neutrality by 2050, requires at least a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and strengthens expectations on companies to measure and manage emissions across their value chains. As a result, credible and traceable carbon data is becoming a baseline expectation in the EU market.

What This Means for You
PCF provides measurable and comparable data that helps you:

  • Align with global and EU climate commitments
  • Identify and prioritise emission reductions
  • Strengthen your sustainability strategy across the value chain

EU Legislation – What Is Changing?
EU policy is steadily moving toward more comprehensive sustainability reporting requirements. Even where beverage producers are not directly regulated, customers and business partners may be — and they increasingly depend on reliable carbon data from their suppliers.

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requires many companies operating in the EU to report greenhouse gas emissions across their entire value chain, including so-called Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from suppliers and products). This makes robust product-level carbon data increasingly important for producers, growers, and distributors.

By working with PCF today, you are better prepared for evolving regulatory expectations and requests from customers.

Global Standards – Ensuring Credibility and Comparability
PCF is aligned with internationally recognised standards and frameworks. This ensures that the data is robust, comparable, and credible — both now and in the future.

Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
The Science Based Targets initiative supports companies in setting emission reduction targets aligned with climate science. PCF provides the product-level data needed to set, monitor, and follow up on these targets — including alignment with the FLAG (Forest, Land and Agriculture) guidance relevant to agricultural supply chains.

Greenhouse Gas Protocol
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the world’s most widely used framework for greenhouse gas accounting. Systembolaget’s PCF methodology follows its principles, helping ensure transparency and consistency across the value chain.

ISO 14067
The ISO 14067 is the international standard for Product Carbon Footprints. Systembolaget’s PCF methodology is grounded in ISO 14067 and adapted to enable consistent, large-scale assessments across a wide range of products in the beverage assortment.

What This Means for You
Using PCF data aligned with global standards helps you:

  • Strengthen your climate reporting
  • Ensure methodological consistency and credibility
  • Build trust with customers, partners, and stakeholders
