Product Carbon Footprint

Different roles - one value chain

Starting with the Swedish importer, each reporting body registers activity data from one's contribution to the product and then sends an invitation forward to one's direct suppliers, such as producers. Producers register activity from production and send invitations forward to growers and other types of suppliers contributing with ingredients.

Who can report

Examples of participating reporters are:

  • Importers– register information about the product, packaging and transport
  • Producers – provide data about production, packaging and transport
  • Growers– submit activity data for cultivation and transport

What to report

The reporting concerns data on the cultivation of raw materials, production of beverages, packaging and transport. The climate impact from cultivation, production, packaging and transport together form the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).

Activity data is recorded by the supply chain in the PCF tool, which is provided by CarbonCloud. The climate impact of recorded activity data is automatically calculated and displayed directly in the platform.

By activity data, we mean operational information about the activities and inputs that in different ways affect the product's total climate footprint. Examples of activity data include:

Production

  • Production volume
  • Amount of raw material
  • Energy use

 Cultivation

  • Fuel use
  • Fertilizer: Amount and type
  • Pesticides: Amount and type

CarbonCloud: How the Platform Works

CarbonCloud is a network platform for product carbon footprinting. Systembolaget invites their suppliers to the platform, who in turn invite theirs, and so on. Step by step, the network is expanded, with each party contributing data for their activities. Together, the network builds a complete carbon footprint for the product.

Timeline for the pilot

The pilot started in April 2025 and follows this timeline:

  • April: Information, kick-off, training
  • May 5th: The platform opened for data registration
  • Continuous support – Link to “support & resources”
  • June 30th: Last day of data registration
  • June 30th & July 1st – last of weekly Q&A sessions.
